OXNARD (105.3 THE FAN) – Sean Lee cited the “intensity’’ of Sunday’s Blue-White Scrimmage but the reality is, the Dallas Cowboys don’t have enough healthy bodies to be fully competitive.
But it’s coming.
Five FishTips from the session in Oxnard:
FISHTIP 1: Tony Romo in the two-minute drill in a real game is often magical. Romo running the hurry-up here? Not even fair.
FISHTIP 2: Defensive lineman David Irving was a dominant force in the late-going, twice getting into the offensive backfield to make plays. Yes, Dallas is in search of help here … but Irving told me he thinks the Cowboys have the in-house weapons to be successful along the D-line right now. If he plays like this, he may be right.
FISHTIP 3: Dez Bryant was Dez Bryant, but behind him, competitions are brewing. Can Brice Butler push T-Will? And while both of them should make the squad, what about Andy Jones pushing for a fifth or sixth spot? And if it’s “fifth,’’ what happens to Lucky Whitehead?
FISHTIP 4: Where Whitehead earns his spot is on special teams, and he had a dazzling punt return for a TD in the Blue-White that reminds how elusive he can be … when he secures the football.
FISHTIP 5: Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said watching Dak Prescott and Jameill Showers at QB convinces him “more than ever’’ that Dallas doesn’t need to trade for a vet like Cleveland’s Josh McCown. I think this is “Jerry Poppins’’ speaking … but trade talk — involving Ron Leary and Darren McFadden and eventually, an edge-rusher to be acquired — is worth monitoring on Monday’s players day off and beyond.
Which we will do 24 hours a day on THE Cowboys Station, 105.3 The Fan.
